What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
Starting therapy can feel exciting, overwhelming, hopeful, or even a little intimidating — sometimes all at once. At The Rosetree Center, we understand that reaching out for support is a meaningful step, and we strive to make your first session feel welcoming, collaborative, and judgment-free.
Whether you’re seeking support for anxiety, trauma, relationships, intimacy concerns, identity exploration, compulsive behaviors, or simply feeling “stuck,” your first therapy appointment is designed to help you begin building a safe and supportive connection with your therapist.
Before Your Appointment
Before your first session, you will typically complete intake paperwork through our secure client portal. This may include:
Consent and privacy forms
Basic medical and mental health history
Insurance or payment information
Questionnaires related to your concerns or goals
This information helps your therapist better understand your background and tailor treatment to your needs before you even walk through the door.
Arriving at the Office
The Rosetree Center is located in Media, Pennsylvania, and offers both in-person and telehealth therapy services for clients in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
If you’re attending in person, you can expect a comfortable, private environment designed to help you feel at ease. Many clients are nervous before their first appointment — that’s completely normal. Your therapist is not there to judge or “analyze” you. The first session is really about getting to know you and understanding what brings you in.
What Happens During the First Session?
Your first therapy session is often called an “intake session.” Think of it as the beginning of a conversation, not an interrogation.
Your therapist may ask questions about:
What prompted you to seek therapy now
Current stressors or challenges
Relationships, family dynamics, or support systems
Mental health history
Goals for therapy
Past experiences with therapy or counseling
Questions about safety, coping, or emotional well-being
You are never required to share more than you feel comfortable discussing. Therapy moves at your pace.
At The Rosetree Center, we take a sex-positive, affirming, and trauma-informed approach to care. Our clinicians work to create a space where clients can openly explore concerns related to sexuality, relationships, identity, trauma, intimacy, and emotional wellness without shame or stigma.
Therapy Is Collaborative
One common misconception is that therapists simply tell clients what to do. In reality, therapy is collaborative. Your therapist may help you:
Identify patterns or triggers
Build coping skills
Improve communication
Process difficult emotions or experiences
Explore relationships and identity
Set realistic personal goals
You do not need to have everything “figured out” before starting therapy. Part of the process is learning together what support looks like for you.
It’s Okay if You Feel Emotional
Some people leave their first session feeling relieved. Others feel emotional, tired, hopeful, uncertain, or all of the above. Beginning therapy can bring up feelings you may have been carrying for a long time.
There is no “right” way to feel after your first appointment.
The most important thing is whether you feel safe, respected, and heard.
Finding the Right Fit
The relationship between therapist and client matters deeply. Your first session is also an opportunity to decide whether the therapist feels like a good fit for you. Building trust takes time, and it is okay to ask questions about your therapist’s approach, experience, or what future sessions may look like.
At The Rosetree Center, we believe therapy should feel supportive, empowering, and individualized to each client’s unique needs.
Taking the First Step
Starting therapy is an act of self-care and courage. You do not have to wait until things feel unbearable to seek support. Therapy can be a space for healing, growth, self-understanding, and connection.
If you’ve been considering therapy, your first session does not have to be perfect — it just has to begin.
